Contaminated land advisory
Transport for NSW has appointed Nation Partners as strategic advisors and subject matter experts for contamination matters on the Sydney Metro project. Sydney Metro is Australia’s largest public transport project, involving the delivery of 31 metro stations and more than 65 kilometres of new, standalone rail. The project includes two 15 kilometre tunnels under North Sydney, Sydney Harbour and the Sydney CBD and an upgrade to the existing rail corridor to Bankstown.
We are overseeing contamination issues throughout the entire project lifecycle. Our team provides strategic and technical guidance for all facets of the project, including:
- Corporate strategy: developing and tracking the project’s overarching contaminated land management strategy.
- Property acquisitions: providing strategic and technical advice on contamination, environment, health and safety risks for property acquisition and due diligence processes.
- Property management: providing technical advice on property management requirements following acquisition.
- Contamination and technical advice: identifying and assessing contamination risks across the entire project, and designing measures and procedures to mitigate such risks. We are responsible for the developing and overseeing contamination investigation scopes, and incorporating investigation activities with technical design inputs.
- Contracts: providing input to construction contract documents to ensure legal compliance, risk management, and thorough consideration of contamination issues.
- Stakeholder liaison: liaising with key stakeholders including consultants, construction contractors, site auditors, and the NSW EPA in relation to contamination matters.
Client challenge + benefit delivered
The size and complexity of the Sydney metro project, combined with significant public attention and community impacts, means a comprehensive and robust strategy for contaminated land management is required for successful delivery.
Our team has led the development and implementation of the project’s contaminated land strategy. We worked with the team to understand corporate objectives, providing the framework for the strategy, then incorporating identification of contamination risks and detailed technical advice to overcome site-specific contamination and remediation challenges.
